The specific case of ozone in water

Ozone is frequently used in water treatment systems, whether for drinking water, to eliminate unwanted colours and flavours, to precipitate dissolved metals, to treat waste water or to clean cooling towers against legionella. But in this case we are going to focus on the use of ozone gas mixed with irrigation water and the variation in its qualities according to the amount of ozone added to the irrigation water.

In low concentrations, around 0.4 to 2 ppm, it fulfils its role as a disinfectant, since ozone not only acts as a deodorizer and oxidizer of dissolved organic substances, but also as a disinfectant.

Application via irrigation

Ozone, due to its oxidising properties, is considered to be one of the fastest and most effective known microbicides.

It does not produce any waste contaminants after degradation, simply turning back into oxygen thereby favouring root development and plant growth.

The application of ozonised water is most effective with low levels of organic matter in pipes, low soil and water temperatures and low pH levels, between 6 and 7.

Ozone degradation in oxygen occurs approximately 30 minutes after being produced in aqueous conditions provided there is no organic matter, it is at a pH of 7 and there is a water temperature of 15º. For this reason, ozone must be produced at the time and place where its disinfectant action is required.
